Unified Book Covers

Project Summary:
This project is a unified series of classic book covers created for a fictional publishing imprint, Narrative Annal. The goal was to reimagine well-known literary works with a cohesive visual language, balancing modern design sensibilities with the tone and themes of each book. Titles include King Lear, The Picture of Dorian Gray, To the Lighthouse, The Iliad, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, and As I Lay Dying.
Design Thought:
Each cover follows a shared layout: a torn divide between a black upper half and a muted yellow lower half. This split symbolizes conflict, fragility, or transformation—themes present in all the texts.
The top half features the title, author, and a notable quote. The bottom half includes symbolic illustrations specific to each story, creating both individuality and unity across the series.
Typography is consistent, using a single serif typeface to maintain a literary tone while keeping focus on the imagery and negative space.
Color & Style:
The palette is limited to black and pale yellow, evoking aged paper and classical print. This choice reinforces the timelessness of the texts while ensuring high visual contrast.
Illustrations are stylized with grain and brush textures, giving them a raw, expressive quality that complements the themes of mortality, identity, and human struggle.
Goal:
To showcase series design and print layout skills through a restrained, symbolic system. The result is a modern reinterpretation of classic literature that highlights consistency, narrative design, and thoughtful visual storytelling.
